Arsenal have launched a stunning late raid to hijack Barcelona’s top winter target, ready to blow the Catalans out.

The Catalan giants have long been known for their aggressive scouting across the region, identifying emerging stars at a young age in hopes of grooming them for future first-team roles.

The deal reflects the increasingly competitive nature of elite-level scouting as top clubs race to secure the next global superstar before rivals steal a march.

For Barcelona, it’s a setback in their vision to continually replenish La Masia and the senior squad with high-quality imports from outside Spain.

The two players at the centre of this tug of war are 16-year-old Ecuadorian twins Edwin and Holger Quintero.

Their painstaking work and admiration for a pair of Independiente del Valle talents has come up short, with another of Europe’s elite outmanoeuvring them at the final hurdle.

Both stood out in Barcelona’s scouting reports for their advanced technique and versatility: Edwin as a highly technical, two-footed winger, and Holger as a creative No.10 noted for his quickness, vision and goal threat arriving from midfield.

Arsenal, however, acted swiftly to move ahead of the competition.

The Gunners finalised terms with Independiente del Valle, with both players undergoing medicals in London.

While the twins will immediately return to Ecuador after signing, their formal move to the Premier League is scheduled for the summer of 2027, when they reach the age of 18, in line with FIFA regulations on international youth transfers.

The fee remains undisclosed, but the value reflects both the players’ promise and the fierce competition involved.

For Barcelona’s academy planners and South American scouts, this outcome is a reminder of the razor-thin margins at the top level and the need for speed and decisiveness in talent acquisition.

While La Masia continues producing elite footballers, retaining an edge for international targets—especially against proactive Premier League rivals—remains an ongoing challenge as the global transfer landscape evolves.
