Barcelona’s midfield continues to dominate headlines, as club officials remain active in the transfer market ahead of a busy summer.

With the arrival of Hansi Flick, the Catalan giants are reportedly re-evaluating their options in central areas, where experience is being prioritised alongside emerging talent.

After a campaign that saw inconsistency plague the midfield, Flick is believed to favour bringing in players with top-level European experience who can deliver from day one.

The club has already been linked with a number of veteran names to balance out a young core featuring the likes of Pedri, Gavi, and Fermin Lopez.

Now, in a move that would surprise many fans, the name of a Premier League regular has surfaced as a serious target.

According to reports, Barcelona have held talks with Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey over a potential free transfer this summer.

Thomas Partey, 31, is out of contract on 30 June and has yet to agree terms on a new deal with the Gunners.

Despite enjoying his most consistent season in North London — featuring in a career-best 52 matches — his long-term future remains uncertain.

Arsenal confirmed this week that they are still in discussions with Partey, but no agreement has been reached.

A club statement read: “The following players’ contracts also expire on June 30, 2025.

“Discussions are ongoing, and once matters are finalised between all parties, we will communicate in due course: Chloe Kelly, Thomas Partey and Michal Rosiak.”

Manager Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, has publicly expressed his desire to retain the Ghana international.

“I think consistency-wise it’s been his best season,” said Arteta.

“His availability has been exceptional, and he’s a really important player for us.”

Barcelona’s interest is reportedly being driven by Partey’s prior experience in La Liga, having made his name at Atletico Madrid before his £45 million move to Arsenal in 2020.

His familiarity with Spanish football and free agent status could make him an attractive short-term solution for the Blaugrana, who continue to grapple with Financial Fair Play restrictions.

Whether Partey remains in England or returns to Spain is now likely to hinge on the progress of negotiations in the coming days.
