AC Milan has emerged as a potential destination for Barcelona’s star, who faces an uncertain future as the club eyes a replacement.
A Barcelona player has a critical summer in front of him as the club is preparing a complete overhaul of their situation and is likely to move on.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the club from Catalonia believes that for the future of their club that they should make a signing for a younger keeper and make that person the first-choice goalkeeper.
Although this player wants to fight for a spot at Camp Nou, there is significant interest from a number of Europe’s biggest clubs, and AC Milan is currently the front-runners to sign the player.
That player is Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Barcelona’s long-serving captain and German international.
Milan’s interest is all because they need their goalkeeper, Mike Maignan, with Maignan on the cusp of a move to Chelsea.
Ter Stegen is identified with his world-class reflexes, and his ability to play the ball is seen to fit perfectly into Massimiliano Allegri’s rebuild of their squad.
The likely move would also ensure ter Stegen stays a first-choice player and hopefully for ter Stegen keep his spot as Germany’s No. 1 as they try and prepare for the 2026 World Cup coming up.
Staying in Europe allows him to remain close to his family in Barcelona, making Milan far more identified than extremely lucrative offers he has received from Saudi Arabia.
But first, Milan’s pursuit is dependent on two events: selling Maignan and convincing ter Stegen to leave Barcelona, where he has a contract until 2028.
As Barcelona looks to sign Joan Garcia and have Wojciech Szczesny re-extend his contract at Juve, it suggests ter Stegen would see limited playing time, and with ter Stegen’s high salary, that adds some stakes for a potential transfer.
While ter Stegen has made firm statements about how he wants to stay, the opportunity to play regularly for a historic club like Milan could be enough to entice him away from Camp Nou, especially if he has a legit shot at playing regularly.
The transfer window is warming up, and in the next few weeks, we should have clarity on whether ter Stegen will remain a Blaugrana or start a new chapter in Serie A.
