Barcelona shortlists 5 defenders for the January transfer window, with Hansi Flick targeting defensive reinforcements to navigate injury crises
The need to find a suitable replacement for veteran defender Iñigo Martínez, who left the club last summer, has become a pressing issue for Barcelona.
His departure left a significant void in the heart of the backline, exposing weaknesses that the club is eager to address.
In light of this, Barcelona’s technical staff, led by Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco, have shortlisted five central defenders who fit the profile to bolster the team’s defensive stability and tactical needs, as reported by Diario Sport.
Among the top candidates is German international Nico Schlotterbeck from Borussia Dortmund.
Highly rated for his speed, intelligence, and ability to play out from the back with an accurate left foot, Schlotterbeck is considered most similar to the style of Iñigo Martinez and a favorite of Hansi Flick.
However, his premium price makes him a challenging but desirable target.
Another promising name is Portuguese defender Gonzalo Inacio from Sporting CP, known for his composure and technical skills, though his €60 million release clause could be a major financial obstacle.
Barcelona is also eyeing some more affordable or readily available options. Marc Guéhi, the English international playing for Crystal Palace, is admired for his toughness and contract situation, making him a potential bargain if Barcelona can move quickly.
Then there is Dayot Upamecano, the French international formerly of Bayern Munich, currently impressing under Vincent Kompany, though he faces competition from Real Madrid.
Finally, the club has started monitoring Nantes’ young defensive talent, titled as Tytel Tati, a 17-year-old prodigy tipped for the future, but his lack of experience is a limiting factor.
The January transfer window could be pivotal for the Blaugrana as they look to close gaps exposed during a challenging season and strengthen their chances in domestic and European competitions.
