Barcelona’s bid to secure a €25m Inter Milan star is faltering due to financial constraints, with the deal likely off.

Barcelona’s ambition to strengthen their squad with a high-profile signing is fading fast, hampered by financial limitations and an inability to offload players.

With less than 48 hours remaining before a key deadline, the club’s inability to free up funds has put the deal in jeopardy, leaving their transfer strategy in limbo as the 2025 summer window progresses.

The player in question is Denzel Dumfries, a €25 million-rated Dutch international whose release clause with Inter Milan expires on July 31, 2025, according to a recent Diario Sport report.

After that, his price will rise to €40 million, a figure Barcelona cannot currently afford without significant squad sales.

Jorge Mendes, acting as the player’s agent, had informed the club that Dumfries was willing to join and that Inter were open to a deal.

Both Hansi Flick and the sporting department saw the defender’s physical dominance and pace as a perfect fit for the right flank.

However, without major defensive departures, the transfer has stalled.

The club’s financial predicament stems from a busy July spent securing key additions for Flick’s project, leaving little room in the budget or squad.

Barcelona views their defense as overcrowded, with players like Hector Fort on the market, but resistance from stars like Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen to leave has complicated matters.

Dumfries’ attributes—strength, speed, and aerial ability—would have complemented Flick’s tactical vision, making his potential absence a missed opportunity.

Barcelona’s history of near-misses in the transfer market looms large, with this case adding to the list of “what could have been.”

Unless a last-minute breakthrough occurs, the Dutch star will likely remain beyond reach, highlighting the club’s ongoing challenge to balance ambition with economic reality.
