Two key Barcelona players are far from renewing

Barcelona contract talks stall with two key stars.

Negotiations over contract renewals for Barcelona stars Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong have reportedly hit a standstill, as per reports from Spain.

Both players have contracts running until 2026 and have dealt with significant injury setbacks in recent seasons.

De Jong recently returned to action in October after a five-month absence due to an ankle injury, while Araujo has yet to feature this season, sidelined by a severe hamstring injury sustained at the Copa America.

With roughly 18 months remaining on their deals, Barcelona is eager to move talks forward.

However, the process has reportedly been met with silence rather than outright refusals, according to Marca. Although the club made offers earlier in 2024, neither player has formally responded.

The two find themselves in distinct negotiating positions. Araujo, recognized as one of the world’s top center-backs at 25, is seen as a priority for Barca, with the club willing to offer him a substantial five-year extension.

De Jong’s situation is more complex; the midfielder would need to accept a reduced salary to remain at the club.

Barcelona has also issued an ultimatum for De Jong, requiring a decision before the January window, or they may be forced to sell due to his deferred wages from the COVID-19 period.
