With Busquets leaving Europe in summer, Xavi wanted an able replacement in Martin Zubimendi, a player whom Xavi has publicly admired. But with the current financial condition of the club, Barca couldn’t get him for his 60M release clause from Real Sociedad, and had to settle with former La Masia graduate Orial Romeu from Girona for a mere 3M transfer fee.
Orial Romeu has made a decent start, but injury to Frenkie has exposed his cons. He was often jailed by the opposition in the midfield and he couldn’t carry the ball out through. And it was widely seen in the recent games. And with Zubemendi putting out great performances in La Liga and Champions league, the difference in quality is clearly visible. Barca still has a couple of positions to strengthen to complete on all fronts. The defensive midfielder is the one position with an immense importance and needs a player for long term and short term.
There are multiple players whom Deco and his team of scouts are monitoring, but a proven player of quality in Martin Zubimendi is an ideal solution, and has the approval of the manager, Xavi. The only roadblock can be the 60M release clause and he will need some convincing to get him from the Basque club. Multiple top players like Lewandowski, Kounde, and Gundogan, were convinced to come to Barca with the project helmed by Xavi along with the Club’s stature providing a definite reason. The likes of young Spanish talent Pedri, Gavi, Balde, Yamal and Ferran already have the experience to play with Zubimendi and the club is expected to try and get him again in the summer.
Zubimendi has shown his class against Barca in the recent fixture and further showed more reasons why Xavi is aiming for him. His arrival to Barca midfield can make it complete and ready for the next decade. After sorting the defence with vital acquisitions, midfield will also be considered all round. Zubimendi has orchestrated the midfield brilliantly and has shown that he can do it against big names as well. He looks to become one of the best in business, and at Barca he can elevate to the highest level.
