Former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez is on the cusp of a sensational move to steer a Bundesliga powerhouse back to glory.

After a brief and underwhelming stint with their previous manager, the team is looking to a figure known for his tactical acumen and success in steering a squad through turbulent times.

The move, reported on September 2, 2025, could mark a significant step for the coach, who has been absent from the touchline since his departure from a major La Liga side last year.

The club in question is Bayer Leverkusen, which is eyeing former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez to replace Erik ten Hag, sacked after just three matches.

According to Marca, Leverkusen reached out to Xavi to gauge his interest, but the 45-year-old declined, citing that he is not ready to return to coaching.

This isn’t the first time Xavi Hernandez has been on Leverkusen’s radar; he was a top candidate when Xabi Alonso left for Real Madrid earlier this summer, alongside Cesc Fàbregas, before the club opted for Ten Hag.

Xavi’s experience in rebuilding Barcelona post-Lionel Messi, where he nurtured talents like Gavi, Alejandro Balde, and Lamine Yamal, makes him an ideal fit for Leverkusen’s current transition following the exit of key players like Florian Wirtz and Granit Xhaka.

Xavi’s tenure at Barcelona, where he won La Liga in 2022-23, showcased his ability to blend youth with a possession-based philosophy, aligning with Leverkusen’s dynamic style.

However, a trophy-less 2023-24 season led to his exit, and he has since taken a sabbatical, reportedly focusing on personal projects.

Despite rejecting Leverkusen’s approach, the door remains open, with sources suggesting his connection with Alonso, who provided insights about the club, could influence a future decision.

As Leverkusen prepares for its Champions League campaign, starting in less than three weeks, the club must swiftly pivot to find a new leader.

Xavi’s potential involvement promises a thrilling chapter, but for now, his reluctance keeps the German giants searching for their next tactician.
