The imminent signing of a new talent sets the stage for a seasoned veteran to extend his Barcelona contract.
FC Barcelona’s goalkeeping department has been rebuilt this summer, and the club is closing the door on one of the many high-profile signings the club has made this summer.
The new first-choice goalkeeper, confirmed when the release clause of €25 million is paid, will be the last announcement and re-signing before the club’s next developments.
As previously mentioned, the last couple of deals include a renewed contract for a veteran whose experience will offset the new talent, as reported by Diario Sport.
The expected confirmation for the veteran’s renewal is next week, which is in line with the club’s expected restructuring with manager Hansi Flick.
The veteran is Wojciech Szczęsny, the 35-year-old Polish goalkeeper whose contract was originally set to expire in June 2025.
Szczęsny signed with Barcelona in 2024 and has fully agreed to a one-year extension, with an option until 2027.
The re-signing of Szczęsny was negotiated at the same time as the signing of Joan Garcia from RCD Espanyol, and positions him as the second-choice keeper, to back up the 24-year-old who will be replacing the club captain Marc-André ter Stegen.
The combination of youth and experience in the duo is expected to strengthen the defence of Barcelona in the 2025-26 season.
Barcelona’s move to keep Szczęsny reflects their desire to keep a formidable goalkeeping unit in place despite financial constraints and Financial Fair Play in La Liga.
Ter Stegen, under contract until 2028, is under pressure to leave as clubs like Galatasaray and Manchester United look to sign him.
Although it makes sense for Barcelona to keep Szczęsny, who is reliable as a backup, given his previous stints at Juventus and Arsenal, to help Garcia transition to the main goalkeeper.
As Barcelona transitions into this phase, fans now await official announcements as they have touched wood that, under Flick, they can become a much-improved team.
