Complete VAR audio of Ronald Araujo’s foul for Sevilla penalty has been released by La Liga, revealing the detailed discussion between VAR officials and the referee.
Barcelona’s La Liga match against Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium was a tough one for the visitors.
The game ended 4-1 in Sevilla’s favor, with early decisions by the referee playing a big role.
In the 13th minute, Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo challenged Sevilla forward Isaac Romero in the penalty area.
Referee Alejandro Muniz Ruiz checked the VAR monitor and gave Sevilla a penalty, which Alexis Sanchez scored to make it 1-0.
Araujo and his teammates were upset, feeling the call went against them.
The full VAR audio has now been released, giving everyone a clear look at what happened during the review.
VAR official Del Cerro Grande told the referee: “In our opinion, the defender stumbles, trips the attacker, putting his leg between the attacker’s legs.”
Muniz Ruiz asked for more replays and said, “He doesn’t touch the ball… Let’s go with a penalty, OK? Penalty without a card.” The VAR team agreed: “He never touches the ball, he never plays the ball.”
The referee then confirmed: “His leg is in front, perfect.” This audio, shared by Barca Universal, helps explain the decision but has started new discussions.
Some experts, like former referee Mateu Lahoz, say the call was wrong.
He called it “so serious” and pointed out that Romero seemed to fall after wrapping his legs around Araujo, which looks like a simulation.
Officials stand by the penalty, saying the contact was enough for a foul.
The release shows how VAR works, but it also highlights challenges in judging small contacts.
For Barcelona, it’s a reminder of how close decisions can change a game.
As the team prepares for the international break, the focus is on moving forward.
