FC Barcelona is experiencing rough waters in light of continuing scrutiny from UEFA over their financial slippery slope, as they could, too, see some consequences looming over the 2025-26 Champions League season.
The club is taking steps to engage with European football’s governing body to reduce the risks of scrutiny and comply with the strict regulations.
With support from the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), the club is doing its best to clarify financial plans, especially the controversial means for maintaining the economy.
The situation captures the club’s ambition towards sporting goals whilst staying mindful of financial pressures; all the while, they get ready to move back into their renovated Spotify Camp Nou.
Earlier this month, reports suggested that the club had triggered a second consecutive probe into their UEFA Financial Fair Play (FFP) breach, per AS.
They could face severe penalties (player restrictions or points deducted in the Champions League) if the La Liga champions are found guilty of this offence.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta and RFEF president Rafael Lozano were having a chat with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, in Munich during the Nations League final, no less, also about the issue.
The purpose of the meeting, which was convened on Sunday, was to discuss differences in how UEFA assesses the financial “levers” from 2022, such as the sale of prospective television rights, which differ from how La Liga might tell you they have to account for them.
Barcelona is relaxed, indicating that they have not formally received any correspondence from UEFA.
Laporta’s cordial approach and delegating much of the discussion to Louzan, who has very good relationships with Ceferin, indicates a desire not to be severely sanctioned after a €500,000 sanction in 2023 for misreporting profits.
Meanwhile, as the club attempts to blend the likes of Pol Mancheno into the formation, whilst reinforcing FFP with positive departures such as Clement Lenglet, the outcome of this investigation will dictate Barcelona’s European season.
The Barcelona supporters will be keen to find out Laporta’s next steps at this stage and where they lead the club.
