FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta is navigating a turbulent period in the club’s international relations with FIFA and UEFA.

The Catalan giants’ standing with football’s governing bodies is under strain due to recent developments, creating challenges for the club’s global diplomacy.

The source of the friction stems from Laporta’s outspoken comments and actions, which have irritated FIFA president Gianni Infantino and UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.

His persistent support for the European Super League, a rival to UEFA’s Champions League, has been a major point of contention, with Barcelona and Real Madrid remaining tied to the controversial project.

Additionally, Laporta’s criticism of FIFA’s Club World Cup, particularly the decision to award Inter Miami a wild card entry while excluding Barcelona, has fueled discontent within FIFA, further straining relations as reported by Diario Sport.

UEFA’s grievances also include a proposed plan by La Liga, Barcelona, and Villarreal to stage a 2025/26 league match in Miami.

Ceferin expressed his disapproval, stating, “We are not happy, but, as much as we have checked legally, we do not have much room for manoeuvre if the federation agrees.”

This initiative, aimed at expanding La Liga’s global reach, has added to the growing tensions with UEFA.

The strained relationships with FIFA and UEFA pose significant challenges for Barcelona, as cooperative ties with these bodies are essential for the club’s participation in international competitions and its broader influence in world football.

Laporta’s bold approach, while rooted in advocating for Barcelona’s interests, risks diplomatic isolation.

To safeguard the club’s future, Laporta must address these concerns and work to rebuild trust with Infantino and Ceferin.

As Barcelona strives for success on the pitch, resolving these off-field conflicts will be critical to maintaining the club’s prominence and ensuring its long-term stability in the global football landscape.
