As the summer transfer window heats up, FC Barcelona finds itself at a crossroads with one of its key players.
The player’s contract expires on June 30, 2025, leaving only two days to go.
The club is still waiting for the player to sign the contract extension, which was verbally agreed to for a one-year extension.
Currently, the clubs are optimistic about the situation due to the player’s relationship, as the contract extension is already prepared; however, the problem remains pending.
The club certainly has to be wondering about its squad stability with the pre-season approaching. Pre-season is scheduled to start on July 13.
The player is Wojciech Szczesny, the Polish goalkeeper who moved to Barcelona in October 2024 after Marc-André Ter Stegen’s injury, as reported by Diario Sport.
Szczesny came out of retirement after being named first-choice goalkeeper, and immediately earned the trust of his teammates and fans.
By January, Szczesny had solidified his position as first-choice goalkeeper.
He verbally committed to stay, per sport director Deco, but without signing; it seems there is some remaining uncertainty.
The club plans to pair Szczesny with Joan García, and perhaps move on from Ter Stegen and Iñaki Peña for the club’s next restructuring era.
Barcelona’s roadmap is thus a balance between wisdom and youth, with veteran Szczesny and younger goalkeeper García.
Ideally, Ter Stegen will leave the Camp Nou for a club that offers a starting position, despite being the club captain and having three years to run on his contract.
Ter Stegen wants to play and will not relinquish this desire simply to remain at the Camp Nou. It has also been reported that Peña is seeking options after losing his number one spot in the starting XI.
So, if Szczesny decides that Barcelona is the right fit for him and makes an announcement shortly, this will decide whether the club follows the same plan as before or take a chance in the transfer market to look for an elite goalkeeper, which will impact Barcelona’s structure for the 2025-26 season.
