Barcelona’s Spotify Camp Nou rebuild is seriously behind schedule, with insiders now estimating the stadium to be anything but complete until 2027—well off the target from original projections.
The project, which began in 2023, is already six months behind, and much of the delay is due to the slow pace of work on the third tier and the incomplete state of tiers one and two.
According to reports from CuleMania, none of the major elements like seating, toilets, corridors, and press rooms are complete, and the project is very far behind where it should be.
Club president Joan Laporta is increasingly worried, with Barcelona losing an estimated €100 million a year playing at the makeshift Montjuïc stadium.
The price is high for the already financially beleaguered club.
Several factors have contributed to the delays, including delayed permit approvals from Barcelona’s city council, restrictive Spanish labor legislation, and general global economic issues.
Turkish building firm Limak has also voiced complaints of bureaucratic obstacles.
Despite the setbacks, Barcelona still hopes to partly reopen the stadium in September 2025 with a smaller capacity of around 63,000 seats.
The club can request to play their first three league matches away to provide more time for the building.
Construction of the third tier will still go ahead, however, in the 2025-26 season, so the full reopening may be pushed to late 2026 or even 2027.
The delays could also impact Laporta’s political prospects, with presidential elections in Barcelona in 2026.
The development—or non-development—of the stadium could be a central talking point if he seeks re-election.
The club originally looked to reopen in grand style during the 2026-27 season, but with ongoing delays, that is now hanging precariously in the balance.
Fans and the administration will be looking for quicker progress, but for now, patience is required as the highly anticipated new Spotify Camp Nou remains under construction.
