Santos president Marcelo Teixeira has addressed the controversial nature of Neymar‘s move to Barcelona, acknowledging the past legal battles but emphasizing that the two clubs now share a positive relationship.

The Brazilian club’s handling of Neymar’s departure to the Nou Camp in 2013 sparked a series of legal disputes.

Neymar’s €86.2m transfer fee from Santos was initially shrouded in mystery, only to be revealed after an investigation.

Santos later claimed that they had only received €17m of the total fee, leading to a drawn-out case at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Eventually, Barcelona’s payment structure, which included funds directed to Neymar’s private company and father, came to light, prompting the resignation of then-Barca president Sandro Rosell.

Santos subsequently sought compensation, suing Barcelona for over €61m, though they were unsuccessful in their appeal.

Despite the turbulent history, Teixeira maintains that the clubs now share a “healthy relationship,” noting that their interactions have evolved beyond the legal battles. Speaking to Marca, he said, “We have a great relationship with both teams – Atletico Madrid too.”

Reflecting on Neymar’s transfer, he admitted, “Neymar’s transfer to Barcelona wasn’t a positive development, but we have a very healthy relationship.

“We’ve played several friendlies, participated in four-team tournaments, and held anniversary celebrations with Real Madrid.

“Our relationships with Spanish clubs are very positive.”

Now back at Santos after his stint with Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League, the 33-year-old has made an impressive start to his return, contributing three goals and assists in seven appearances.

Teixeira praised Neymar’s dedication, adding, “He’s doing very well, very focused on his work.

“We’re familiar with the Brazilian schedule here; you play on Wednesdays and Sundays.

“He’s very dedicated to training and matches, growing increasingly physically and with confidence, which is very important.”

He continued, “He’s very committed to the project and the players, who see him as a role model.

“The rest of the team trust him.

“He’s committed to the project and the group of players.”

Despite the past controversies, Neymar’s return to Santos and his commitment to the team signals a fresh start for both the player and the club.
