Barcelona’s hard-fought win over Celta Vigo has been accompanied by a dark cloud of disturbing news about the health of Robert Lewandowski.
The Polish forward was brought off in the 77th minute with what was originally believed to be a thigh strain, but recent medical examinations have now established a more serious condition.
Barcelona reports confirmed that Robert Lewandowski suffered a torn thigh muscle, and he will be out of action for about three weeks.
This is a blow for Barcelona, particularly coming as it does ahead of the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid on April 26.
There are only a few days to go before the eagerly awaited encounter, and therefore, Lewandowski’s absence is the equivalent of a gigantic void in attack.
At 35 years of age, the veteran has been the pillar of Barcelona this season, not only their top scorer but a figurehead in the final third, guiding a relatively young side with his experience and serenity.
Manager Hansi Flick is now presented with an enormous tactical headache as he will have to go into the cup final without his leading goal scorer.
Although Ferran Torres has been in sublime form this term when it comes to scoring and is the most natural fit, the Spanish attacker lacks the same amount of physicality and link-up play that Robert Lewandowski provides.
Dani Olmo can also play the false nine position, but Flick is most likely to have trust in Torres as his first choice to lead the attack.
Apart from the Copa del Rey final, the injury also rules him out of playing important La Liga matches, like the match against Mallorca on the 23rd of April, and potentially against Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League 1st leg.
His recovery pattern suggests that he could be back fit in mid-May, but Barcelona will have to manage without him in a tough run of matches.
The responsibility now rests with Flick to devise a solution, and on Barcelona’s other forwards to perform in Lewandowski’s stead.
