Robert Lewandowski, Barcelona’s talisman, stands at a career crossroads as his future at the club takes a dramatic and unexpected turn.
The 37-year-old had long been expected to leave once his deal expired, with no renewal on the table and growing talk of Barça moving towards a younger, cheaper No. 9 profile.
Now, however, the conversation around his continuity has shifted significantly inside the club, with the board no longer ruling out an extension and the player himself pushing to remain part of the project.
That change in stance crystallised during a two-hour summit in a luxury Barcelona hotel, where president Joan Laporta met super-agent Pini Zahavi to discuss the striker’s future away from the spotlight.
In that meeting, Zahavi relayed Lewandowski’s clear message: he wants to stay for one more year, feels physically fit, mentally motivated, and is even willing to accept a reduced salary and secondary sporting role to continue at the club, as reported by Diario Sport.
His family’s strong ties to the city, including business projects led by his wife, further anchor his desire to extend his Camp Nou story.
Even so, Barcelona is in no hurry to make a final call.
The board considers it premature to decide by Matchday 17, preferring to wait for the decisive stretch of the season before committing to a renewal.
Financially, his departure would open a huge salary margin, giving Barça flexibility for a major attacking signing.
But sporting and dressing-room value complicate the equation: Robert Lewandowski remains one of the leaders of the group and a reference for younger forwards.
For now, the club will judge him match by match – starting with his return after missing the Copa del Rey clash vs Guadalajara – before deciding whether this late-career twist ends with a one-year extension or a farewell in 2026.
