FC Barcelona and Real Betis are currently in discussions regarding a co-ownership transfer for an exciting player, adopting the same approach that had Barcelona and Betis splitting the transfer fee for Emerson Royal back in 2019.

As reported by Diario Sport, the clubs agreed to share the total fee of €20 million while allowing Betis to play him first and maintain a future interest in his future use.

This arrangement would allow the two clubs to keep costs down and avoid signing someone outright while allowing them to get the services of a player they like.

The 22-year-old defender, Marc Pubill, was born in Terrassa and was on Spain’s Olympic gold medalist squad earned Barcelona’s interest due to his play this past year, even with Almería’s relegation.

At 1.90 meters tall, Pubill is quick and athletic, strong in the air, and a good positional defender, although his play going inside from the right will require development if he is to have professional success.

Púbil’s contract runs through 2029, but Almería has not completed a promotion, and his transfer now seems much easier.

With the Emerson deal, it saw Barcelona and Betis each handing over €6 million, with Royal arriving at Betis for two years before Barcelona took him off Betis for around €9 million.

When Tottenham signed Royal, they paid £25 million, so both clubs made, to be honest, a decent profit.

If the clubs agree on a similar arrangement, then Betis would purchase an exciting right-back, who would fill a potential hole if all their veteran back-line players, mainly Bellerin, cannot be kept with the club.

Meanwhile, Barcelona could give themselves a future player without the upfront pressure on them to need to sign him.

This partnership illustrates the close relationship between Barcelona and Betis, established on the last couple of deals, Abde, and Vitor Roque.

If the investment in Pubill goes through, this can demonstrate a calculated decision leaning on financial viability to develop a potential defender for each team’s future.
