Barcelona is racing against the clock to register Nico Williams to fall in line with La Liga’s strict financial regulations.
With Hansi Flick demanding that he have a squad to dominate both La Liga and the Champions League, the club is all focused on registering the player.
In an attempt to avoid the registration issues directors had when Dani Olmo arrived at the club, President Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco are enacting a significant financial strategy.
This strategy has been put in place to allow Williams, one of the key targets, to join the club while still being compliant with strict financial controls.
The strategy relies primarily on restructuring finances as part of Frenkie de Jong’s renewed contract.
Part of the contract renewal includes paying down amounts outstanding for postponed payments, which frees up salary space, according to a report by Diario Sport.
This is vitally important because Williams’ release clause of €58 million must be activated before July 9.
In addition, Barcelona is selling off or facilitating player exits, including Ansu Fati’s loan to Monaco, as well as potential sales of Pablo Torre and Andreas Christensen, in pursuit of greater financial flexibility.
Nico Williams will join with a new six-year deal that includes a lower salary initially, and she grows into the role, thus ensuring registration will not be a concern.
The club is undertaking this to adhere to the 1:1 rule in La Liga, so that there is no delay in signing Nico Williams, whom Arsenal and Bayern Munich may be interested in as well.
Barcelona’s swift moves also reflect the ambitions of the club to grow a competitive team around young talent like Lamine Yamal, and the president, Joan Laporta, is taking steps to aid Financial Fair Play by utilizing transfer fees, contracts, and salaries, and boosting Williams’ future.
Flick wants a running, attacking team to challenge each weekend, domestically and in Europe.
