Nico Williams sends a clear signal to FC Barcelona, but financial and competitive obstacles make the transfer challenging.
The prospect of FC Barcelona signing Athletic Club’s Nico Williams has undergone a significant shift, as the La Liga winger has indicated that he is now willing to join the Catalan club during the summer transfer window.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported that Williams has sent a “clear message” to Barcelona when linking himself to the team, stating that he would be happy to wear the Blaugrana colors.
Certainly, this is an important step forward; however, the deal is still financially and competitively difficult to execute.
Nico Williams is a 22-year-old Spanish International who has been the subject of interest from FC Barcelona, but the main financial impediments to the deal continue to loom large.
As a result, Williams currently has a €58 million release clause in his contract with Athletic Club, which is difficult for Barca with their present financial restrictions.
As well as the release clause, Williams may be expecting a high salary alongside agent commissions in exchange for a transfer, even though he is thought to prefer a total package of€12 million in investment salary.
Deco, Barcelona’s sporting director, has identified a natural left-sided forward as one of the transfer priorities, and he thinks Williams’ speed, dribbling, and ability to pull or stretch a defence make him a perfect candidate.
However, Barcelona’s task is now tougher, as both Arsenal and Bayern Munich are also pursuing Williams.
This kind of multi-faceted competition adds a new layer of problems for any attempts from Barcelona to sign Williams.
Last summer, Barcelona were tentatively pursuing the signing of Williams before talks cooled, and after some recent issues with Williams’ camp, doubts arose about any re-emergence of interest.
What gives Barcelona confidence is that Williams’ successful time with Spain, and because he knows such players as Lamine Yamal and Alejandro Balde, he would adapt easily.
As Barcelona negotiates the deal, pay attention to financial fair play and competing bids. This will be one of the more interesting transfer sagas this summer.
