Neymar Jr opens up on his retirement, revealing emotional thoughts about stepping away from football after years of injuries and highs.
At 34, the former Barcelona star and Champions League winner spoke after a recent match appearance, opening up about the physical toll of two decades at the elite level, his unfulfilled World Cup dream beyond 2022’s near-miss.
In an exclusive interview with CazéTV, Neymar opened up about his retirement plans, hinting that December 2026 could mark the end.
“I don’t know what will happen next year. It may be that December comes and I want to retire. I’m living year by year,” he said, emphasising the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada as a pivotal challenge for Santos, Brazil, and himself.
Under coach Carlo Ancelotti, who has signalled inclusion if fully fit, Neymar views this as potentially his final shot at international glory.
His caution stems from a gruelling recovery from meniscus surgery last season, prioritising a pain-free return over rushed appearances.
“I wanted to come back at 100%, without fear. Santos made a great plan, and I held back on some games,” he explained, pleased with his debut form but acknowledging the need for match rhythm.
This measured approach underscores a career plagued by knee, ankle, and hamstring issues, limiting him to sporadic outings since leaving Europe.
Santos, where he exploded onto the scene as a teenager before his €88m Barcelona move in 2013, represents a sentimental homecoming on a contract until 2026.
Retirement whispers have swirled, especially after Philippe Coutinho’s recent exit citing exhaustion, yet Neymar insists his heart will decide post-World Cup.
As 2026 nears, all eyes turn to whether the game’s most gifted flair player bows out on a high or fades quietly.
