Newcastle United manager, Eddie Howe, shares his thoughts on facing a Lamine Yamal-less Barcelona in their UEFA Champions League opener.

With the Magpies set to welcome the La Liga giants on September 18, 2025, the electric atmosphere is expected to mirror their iconic victory over PSG two years ago.

Howe’s insights reveal a mix of respect for Barcelona’s quality and strategic focus for his team to compete in this historic encounter, as per Mundo Deportivo.

Lamine Yamal, Barcelona’s teenage sensation, will miss the match due to pubic discomfort, a blow that Howe lamented in his pre-match press conference.

“It’s a shame he can’t play. I’m disappointed not to be able to see a player of that level, but Barça has talented players on the wings, international players,” Howe stated, acknowledging the depth in Hansi Flick’s squad.

He emphasized the need for Newcastle United to be defensively sharp, particularly on the flanks, to neutralize Barcelona’s attacking threats.

While refusing to pinpoint a single danger, Howe noted, “They’re all very good,” highlighting the collective strength of the Blaugrana.

Howe praised Barcelona’s technical prowess and blistering wing play under Flick, especially after their 6-0 thrashing of Valencia.

“They’re a very technical team with the ball, with a lot of speed on the wings.

They started the season very well, and we have to defend very well,” he said.

To secure a positive result, Howe stressed the importance of discipline without the ball and drawing on past European experiences.

“We can draw on past experiences, but we have to make sure we can prepare the players and see if we’re at their level,” he added.

With the St. James’ Park crowd set to create a “magical” atmosphere, Howe believes his team can rise to the challenge against a formidable Barcelona side.
