In the wake of Nico Williams’ unexpected decision to remain with Athletic Club, Barcelona has a new target to strengthen its squad.

Barcelona is at a crossroads after Nico Williams opted to sign a new contract with Athletic Club, leading to some strategic regrouping as the summer transfer window continues.

The Catalan club was excited at the prospect of adding the exciting winger, who had become a target and was seen as the perfect intangible player for Barcelona, after his notable form in La Liga and Euro 2024.

Instead, Williams signed with Bilbao until at least 2035, and the bill for him is £96.26 million, as reported.

Fans and pundits are speculating on what the follow-up move is for Barcelona’s attacking options after passing over a player seen as an ideal ‘build around and style’ for the club.

Journalist Roberto Bandes on X recommends a more pragmatic(sobering) approach.

Bandes stated, “Since Nico isn’t coming, it’s time to SAVE, SAVE and SAVE AGAIN! At the most expensive we should target a favorable loan for a wing to be Marcus Rashford, and let big investment come in 2026 to sign for a striker.”

The suggestion is Marcus Rashford, of Manchester United, as a possible loan player to fill the void from Williams.

Marcus Rashford has a reputation as a quick player who can finish, which could be a stop-gap, while they save money to pay for a big signing next year.

The idea makes sense considering they can’t spend any money right now, they struggle to register players, and they need to balance their squad.

This change in thought process proves how flexible Barcelona can be with means. While they are still looking for a long-term replacement for Williams, a short-term loan for a player of Rashford’s level may still keep them competitive before a big summer 2026 transfer window.
