Marc-Andre ter Stegen addresses the intensifying competition for his role following a challenging recovery from injury.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen, a familiar face as Barcelona’s goalkeeper and captain, is resolute in keeping his position as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, despite Hansi Flick’s apparent intention to recruit a new keeper.

“I want to be Barcelona’s goalkeeper,” said the 33-year-old German, who has not been at Camp Nou since 2014, and has made just over 400 appearances.

Ter Stegen thinks he can get back on the path after a difficult 2024-25 season was hindered by a serious knee injury, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.

His insistence to hold onto his post is made even more challenging as Barcelona navigate Financial Fair Play, as they have just purchased Joan Garcia from Espanyol for €25m.

“There are no financial problems at Barca,” said a source close to ter Stegen. “Hansi Flick’s plan is more of a generational change than a momentary slide; the focus is on Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny.”

Ter Stegen returned to the pitch in May 2025 after 8 months of struggling with a patellar tendon rupture, faced criticism of his form, and, most importantly, his attitude.

Flick expressed frustration when ter Stegen pressed him to play before he was medically fit, just before the 2025 Champions League semifinal vs Inter Milan.

Ter Stegen’s camp was adamant that they are focused on staying, taking advantage of his current contract with Barcelona until 2028.

With ter Stegen’s leadership is unquestionable, but they claim there’s more fuel in the tank; completed save in the 2018 Supercopa vs Sevilla (penalty kick).
