Former Barcelona stars, Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets, sparked a heated postgame brawl after Inter Miami’s 2025 Leagues Cup final loss.
The 2025 Leagues Cup final between Inter Miami and the Seattle Sounders was a highly anticipated clash, drawing nearly 70,000 fans to Lumen Field.
With stars like Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets leading Inter Miami against a formidable Sounders side, the stage was set for a thrilling encounter.
However, the match’s conclusion was overshadowed by an unexpected turn of events that shifted focus from the pitch to a heated altercation, raising questions about sportsmanship and the intense emotions of high-stakes football.
According to USA TODAY, Suarez and Busquets were at the center of a postgame scuffle following Inter Miami’s 3-0 defeat on August 31, 2025.
Suarez, 38, initiated the chaos by aggressively grabbing 20-year-old Sounders player Obed Vargas by the neck after the final whistle.
As Seattle’s Yéimar Gomez Andrade intervened, Busquets, 37, escalated tensions by punching Vargas in the chin, prompting Vargas to fall dramatically.
The situation intensified as Inter Miami’s Maxi Falcon put Seattle’s Cody Baker in a headlock, while Marcelo Weigandt and Tomás Avilés clashed with Sounders defender Jackson Ragen.
Suarez further marred the scene by appearing to spit on a Seattle staff member, an act that drew widespread condemnation.
Seattle coach Brian Schmetzer expressed frustration that the incident detracted from his team’s stellar performance, led by goals from Osaze De Rosario, Álex Roldán, and Paul Rothrock.
“That shouldn’t be the story,” Schmetzer insisted, praising Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi and co-owner David Beckham for their postgame class.
Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano, distant from the melee, suggested possible provocation but refrained from commenting further.
The scuffle, though brief, has cast a shadow over Inter Miami’s campaign, with potential disciplinary action looming for Suarez and Busquets.
As both teams prepare to meet again in the MLS regular season on September 16, this incident serves as a reminder of the fine line between passion and misconduct in competitive football.
