Barcelona icon Lionel Messi has finally addressed Argentina’s heartbreaking World Cup final defeat after Spain ended the holders’ hopes of defending their crown.
La Roja secured a 1-0 victory after extra time on Sunday evening, with Barcelona forward Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal to hand Spain their first World Cup title since 2010 and deny Argentina back-to-back triumphs.
It marked a bitter end to another memorable tournament for Lionel Messi, who captained his country all the way to the final before falling at the final hurdle.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has now taken to social media for the first time since the defeat, sharing an emotional message with supporters while reflecting on everything Argentina achieved during the competition.
Messi admitted the disappointment of losing the final remains difficult to process but insisted the team can still be proud of what they accomplished together.
“The pain is immense, and it will take time for this wound to heal,” the 39-year-old maestro admitted openly.
“But I also hold onto all the good things: the matches we played, giving it our all, moments that will remain in our memories forever, and the support of an entire country, which, combined with this group’s hard work and effort, led us to rank among the world’s best once again.”
The Barcelona legend also reminded fans not to overlook the remarkable consistency Argentina have shown on football’s biggest stage in recent years, having now reached consecutive World Cup finals.
“It is hard to fully appreciate what we achieved right now, but this group reached two consecutive World Cup finals,” he emphasised.
Lionel Messi also reserved special praise for the Argentine supporters, thanking them for standing behind the team throughout another unforgettable tournament.
“Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart, for every kind word and message. Once again, we managed to unite as a country and stand together, sharing the immense pride of being Argentine.”
Despite the disappointment, Messi showed his class by congratulating Spain after they lifted the trophy following Ferran Torres’ extra-time winner.
“I also want to congratulate Spain on winning the title,” Messi stated.
While Argentina were left devastated by the defeat, Messi’s message reflected both the pain of falling short and the pride of leading his nation to yet another World Cup final during what has become one of the greatest international careers football has ever seen.
