An Inter Miami representative recently teased the idea of Lionel Messi going up against his former team, FC Barcelona.
Messi left Barcelona three years ago due to the club’s financial struggles with renewing his contract, and since then he has gained a strong footing in the MLS with Inter Miami. At 37, Messi seems to be relishing his time in Florida, achieving notable success with a 2nd Copa America win just a month ago.
The possibility of Messi playing against Barcelona is still very much alive. Xavier Asensi, Inter Miami’s President of Operations, hinted to Mundo Deportivo that there’s a chance of Messi and Inter Miami squaring off against Barcelona once the Camp Nou stadium reopens.
Asensi commented, “It depends on when it is, let’s talk about it.”
Since his departure from Catalonia in 2021, rumors have swirled regarding Messi’s potential return to Barcelona in some capacity, but it has not come to fruition.
Asensi’s recent statement hints that Messi and Inter Miami could potentially journey to Europe next year to face Barcelona, potentially coinciding with the grand reopening of the newly refurbished Camp Nou, the best stadium in football.
