La Liga and Barcelona are embroiled in a heated battle after the league made a move to cut the club’s salary cap, citing as a motive the removal of €100 million of income from the rental of 475 VIP seats at Camp Nou from their accounts.

Barcelona retaliated with a stern flourish, accusing La Liga of invading their right to confidentiality and trying to destabilize the club.

The row began when La Liga released a statement questioning Barcelona’s finances, to which the club reacted by calling it a “campaign of misinformation”.

Within a rapid turnaround of events, La Liga withdrew the statement after 24 hours, though they still denied Barcelona’s accusations of impropriety.

According to Diario Sport, the league explained their action as to uphold the right to honour, associative transparency, and the integrity of the competition, and also dismissed any wrongdoing.

Miguel Angel Galan, president of CENAFE, suggested that Barcelona could seek the suspension of La Liga president Javier Tebas for breaching confidentiality.

However, although there appeared to be a public spat, Barcelona is unlikely to move to such drastic action, with Tebas and club president Joan Laporta said to remain on good terms.

The war of words followed after Barcelona successfully registered players Dani Olmo and Pau Victor last week, which La Liga later appealed.

The league is seeking an injunction that will bar them from playing, further escalating tensions.

Although La Liga’s retraction of the press release can ease short-term hostility, the underlying financial and regulatory problems remain.

Barcelona’s demand for confidentiality and equitable treatment underscores the continued battle between clubs and the league regarding financial controls.

For the moment, the war of words rages on, but whether this will have lasting repercussions remains to be seen.
