When Hansi Flick took over, one of the questions was who his central defensive partnership was going to be.
Many assumed that Ronald Araújo was going to be the one defender who was nailed on to start, unfortunately, due to an injury before the season started, that plan had to be abandoned.
In the end, Flick settled on a duo of Inigo Martinez and Pau Cubarsi, a partnership, that since recently, has been crucial to how Barca plays.
Sadly, in Barcelona’s 5-2 victory over Real Madrid in the Super Cup final, Martinez picked up a hamstring injury that is set to keep him out for five weeks.
Since then, Flick has been playing a mixture of Araujo and Garcia next to Cubarsi, who has surprisingly become the one mainstays in the Blaugrana’s defence this campaign.
Inigo Martinez Contract News
Despite picking up an injury, Martinez is set to be rewarded for his amazing performances under the German coach this season.
Jijantes, via Managing Barca, have reported that the 33-year-old will sign a one-year extension at the club.
Martinez’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season and this contract will see him extend until 2026.
This move is a clear sign that Flick believes the Spaniard still has a big part to play in Barcelona’s future, despite him entering the twilight of his career.
