Barcelona had a tough challenge against Inter Milan last night when the Champions League semi-final first leg ended in an exciting 3-3 draw at Montjuic. Unfortunately, not only did the Blaugrana draw against the Italians, but they also hurt themselves by losing Jules Kounde, who could influence their upcoming must-win fixtures.
Jules Kounde, a mainstay in defense throughout this season, had to be substituted shortly before halftime after pulling at his leg and in apparent discomfort.
Kounde was replaced by Eric Garcia, but the damage may have already been done.
Reports from FCBRAC1 indicate that the French defender has suffered a hamstring injury, which could keep him out of two of the biggest games of the season for Barcelona over the next few weeks!
The 26-year-old is now a major doubt for next week’s second leg against Inter Milan at the San Siro, a game that will ultimately decide their fate in the Champions League.
More worryingly, the defender is almost certain to miss El Clasico against Real Madrid on May 11, which in all intents and purposes, could be a title-deciding game in La Liga.
His absence creates a huge hole in Barcelona’s back four.
Kounde has been a staple this season, appearing in 53 matches in all competitions, with four goals and eight assists to boot.
His play and versatility at either right back or centre back have been priceless.
With Kounde likely out, Flick will have to lean on Eric Garcia or young Hector Fort, and hopes neither will wilt under the pressure of the occasion.
Losing a key player at such an important time can be an expensive casualty when Barcelona is battling for their European life, and their domestic title aspirations hang in the balance.
