Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, despite the defeat, was steadfast in supporting his players as he walked into the dressing room and told them he was proud.

Barcelona’s hopes of reaching the Champions League final were dashed in their and their supporters’ eyes in a heartbreaking 3-3 draw with Inter Milan, who equalized in the 92nd minute of the second leg of the semifinal.

According to reports, Joan Laporta offered no criticism and instead praised his players.

“You have all been valiant fighting back from two deficits in this tie with unbelievable belief, courage, and determination.” He told the group.

“You can walk away with your heads held high, the supporters are very proud of you.”

Joan Laporta spoke to a squad deeply disappointed, and in his calm demeanour, he wanted to alleviate some of the disappointment in the dressing room and show that the club was unified in defeat.

Rather than lamenting the defeat, Laporta took a long-term view and inspired hope for the next ones to come.

“We will do it again and we will do it better,” he said.

In doing so, he showed his belief that Barcelona will return to the European stage.

The players, still affected by the defeat, liked the support, though the defeat was still frustrating them.

Some were visibly upset, especially about the controversial foul on Gerard Martin before Inter Milan scored the decisive goal, although some of the reason for these feelings was certainly about how it changed the game.

Laporta’s comments were important to reinforce the footballing belief; Barcelona do not capitulate in defeat, but regroup and rebuild.

With Hansi Flick coaching the team and the talented core of young players, they have the opportunity to bounce back.

Laporta’s comments also clearly showed that he has faith in this team; he didn’t want them to forget this disappointment, but rather to let it fuel their motivation to be better next time.

As Barcelona turns its attention back to domestic business, including the upcoming El Clásico, Laporta’s comments ensure that the players understand the need to stick together to provide the best platform for the future.
