FC Barcelona has commenced its summer transfer window with a bang, as they have officially signed Joan Garcia from their La Liga rivals RCD Espanyol.
The 24-year-old Spanish international, upgraded as one of La Liga’s best last season, has signed a six-year deal with Barcelona, as the club interprets their knowledge with Hansi Flick for the 2025/26 season.
This is an ambitious signing as Barcelona is looking for a talented goalkeeper while dealing with uncertainties with their options at the current time.
Joan Garcia, whose €25 million release clause was triggered by Barcelona, which now wraps up the move following rapid negotiations.
Joan Garcia was crucial to Espanyol’s battle to stay in La Liga with his speed, sharpness, and poise, earning him praise that he was the best La Liga goalkeeper in 2024/25.
Garcia brings both physicality and athleticism to become a real option for the GK position at Barcelona and will certainly change the GK options at the club.
Garcia is now expected to be the number 1 goalkeeper reported out of Barcelona, and initially replace current captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen, as the club is unable to provide clarity on their goalkeeper’s future.
Despite entering into an expensive move, the club clearly has a strategy in mind, and the signing occurred after La Liga confirmed the payment had been received.
Garcia’s transfer to Barcelona was worked on with care since making the decision official on June 18, 2025, including a moment where the goalkeeper made sure to thank Espanyol fans before his unveiling! Garcia committed to Barcelona until at least 2031 on a six-year contract that highlighted the long-term plans for the player and the club.
Barcelona is trying to get around Financial Fair Play issues but was fairly positive they could register Garcia without issue.
The unveiling on June 20th is exciting- it marks the club’s ambition to create a team capable of competing in Europe.
Garcia can be a reliable, proven player for Flick’s youthful squad, with players joining through the transfer window.
