After Marc-Andre Ter Stegen ruptured his patellar tendon, the club decided to contract Wojciech Szczęsny about coming out of retirement to be Hansi Flick’s backup keeper.

Unfortunately for Inaki Pena, the Polish keeper has ended up becoming the German’s first-choice shot-stopper and until Ter Stegen returns that does not look like changing.

Due to this impressive form from the former Arsenal man, the club are reportedly set to offer him an extension, which would keep him around the club for another season.

With Barca set to start talks with Espanyol’s Joan Garcia, Szczęsny could be the third-choice keeper but having him around definitely would not hurt.

In a recent interview, cited by Managing Barca, Szczęsny spoke about potentially renewing his current deal at Barcelona.

“If you asked me at the start of the season, I’d say I’ll be leaving Barça in June. But I love the time I‘ve spent here.

“My family is happy, my son loves his school, my wife loves being here. I’m open to everything.”

Szczęsny is only on around €60k per week at Barcelona so if he is open to staying at the club as an emergency backup whilst also being a leader in the dressing room then it is a win-win for everyone.

If Ter Stegen gets injured again or they decide not to sign a young keeper next summer then Flick knows he can trust the Polish keeper to perform when called upon.

Time will tell but the rumours so far seem positive and with it being unlikely Ter Stegen returns this season we are set to see more and more of Szczęsny in the coming months.
