Ilkay Gundogan abrupt exit from Barcelona in the summer of 2024 left fans puzzled, following a stellar season as a linchpin in Xavi’s midfield.
The German international, who joined the Catalan giants in 2023, was lauded for his leadership and experience, yet his tenure ended after just one year.
In a candid interview with Diario Sport, Ilkay Gundogan opened up about the factors behind his departure, shedding light on his conversations with Xavi and new coach Hansi Flick, as well as the club’s shifting priorities.
His honesty reveals the complexities of his decision, driven by both personal reflection and external pressures.
Ilkay Gundogan described fulfilling his lifelong dream of playing for Barcelona, but sensed a disconnect despite his contributions.
“I had a good relationship with Xavi, but only Real Madrid were too strong,” he said, hinting at competitive frustrations.
The club’s financial motives became clear, as they favored his exit despite a “very decent season.”
Even the arrival of Hansi Flick, with whom Gundogan shared a strong bond, couldn’t alter the course.
“Hansi and I were motivated, but the club had other plans,” he admitted, noting a warm birthday call from Flick as a highlight.
The opportunity arose unexpectedly from his wife, Sara, who jokingly urged him to “Call Pep!” Gundogan took her advice, and Pep Guardiola at Manchester City quickly welcomed him back.
The decision ultimately came together very quickly, giving Gundogan the chance to return home.
He is now well settled in Manchester, and is “feeling incredibly at home”, and excited for Manchester City in the future.
Gundogan’s departure was bittersweet, which speaks to his sense of realism and matter-of-fact mindset, and also a desire to avoid drama for Barca’s new challenge without him.
