As Barcelona enters a series of defining matches in the season, Hansi Flick is not simply implementing tactical training, but rather, he is fostering a mental transformation.
The German coach has taken the team’s training ground and transformed it into a motivational environment; slogans are plastered on walls in the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper in order to create a concrete mentality.
“All united, we make Barça,” and “The strength of everyone makes us one” are two of the slogans that occupy the personal environment of the players, but perhaps the most important is: “We will achieve the treble.”, according to AS.
Flick’s approach is not simply motivational – he is aiming to instill belief. He has a plan in place to constantly have that belief in his players’ heads and to stay in sight of the end goal.
This is not a hopeful statement, this is an order.
Hansi Flick has even brought in a psychologist and a publicist to help the team with mental conditioning, to show how serious he is about collecting LaLiga, the Copa del Rey, and the Champions League and making a run at a treble.
The timing simply could not be better.
After all, the team’s first major test in trying to secure a treble comes on Saturday in the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid, and a victory would provide an enormous boost going into a tense LaLiga season finale and Champions League semi-final against Inter Milan.
The players have also bought into Flick’s vision; they’ve already begun to talk openly about the possibility of creating history.
It is yet to be seen whether Barcelona’s lofty ambitions will be rewarded with silverware.
But what is clear is that under Hansi Flick, “treble” is not just an ambition, it is the aim. The walls say it, the players believe it, now they just need to prove it.
