One of the surprise selections in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Athletic Club was Iñaki Peña’s exclusion in favour of Wojciech Szczęsny.

Despite the confusion, the former Juventus and Arsenal keeper massively impressed, keeping a clean sheet and making some important saves.

After the game, it was revealed the reason why Peña didn’t start was due to him arriving late to the final training session.

Hansi Flick is known to be very strict when it comes to punctuality so this punishment was not out of the norm for the German coach.

However, the 25-year-old lateness might have a drastic effect on his future starting role for Barcelona.

Fernando Polo of Mundo Deportivo has claimed that the Polish international is ‘likely to start’ the final tomorrow against Real Madrid after impressing Flick in the semi-final.

Even though Peña has been Barça’s starting choice goalkeeper this season, if Szczęsny impresses for a third time then it might see the Alicante native lose his starting spot in La Liga and the Champions League.
