Barcelona’s return to full strength at Spotify Camp Nou this week produced far more than just three points.
Hansi Flick’s side made light work of Athletic Club, running out 2-0 winners through goals from Raphinha and Fermin Lopez.
Rodri made his highly-anticipated debut off the bench, offering supporters an early glimpse of the summer’s marquee arrival.
Beneath the result, though, sat a statistic that pushed the occasion into the club’s history books entirely.
Flick’s starting eleven carried an average age of just 23.18 years, the youngest line-up Barcelona have ever fielded in a home fixture, according to journalist Oriol Jove.
Seven of the eleven starters came through La Masia, with Pedri and Joan Garcia adding two further Spanish internationals to a side built overwhelmingly from within.
Raphinha, born in 1996, stood out as the only outfield starter born in the previous century, and alongside Anthony Gordon was one of just two players not born in Spain.
The previous record had stood for 14 years, set by Pep Guardiola back in December 2011 for a Champions League group-stage tie against BATE Borisov.
That night carried an average age of 23.26, built around five players registered with Barcelona’s B side at the time: Marc Bartra, Raphinha, Isaac Cuenca, Martin Montoya and Sergi Roberto.
Flick’s line-up has now surpassed that mark, setting a new club record for a home fixture at 23.18.
The trend has been building for some time under the German coach, who fielded an even younger XI away at Real Betis last season with an average of 23.34, the club’s youngest in La Liga competitive football for 95 years.
Barcelona’s overall squad now carries the youngest average age in La Liga at 24.2, level with Levante, and ranks as the fifth-youngest across Europe’s top five leagues.
Eleven players in the current squad are still teenagers, with Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsi and Marc Bernal already established regulars despite none of them turning 20 yet.
Only five senior players in the squad are over 30, three of whom, Wojciech Szczesny, Joao Cancelo and Rodri, arrived only this summer.
Cubarsi missed out on Thursday’s line-up after being carefully managed following his involvement with Spain over the summer, with Gerard Martin deputising alongside Andreas Christensen at centre-back.
The result extends Barcelona’s perfect start to the new La Liga season, following a 5-0 opening-day win away at Elche.
Flick’s continued trust in his academy graduates shows little sign of slowing, with the manager repeatedly stating his belief that La Masia remains central to the club’s long-term identity.
