Barcelona have made the perfect start to their La Liga title defence, opening the campaign with a convincing victory.

Hansi Flick’s side looked in control throughout their first league outing of the new season.

The result gives the Catalan giants plenty of confidence heading into their next fixture.

However, the emphatic scoreline was overshadowed by a worrying moment involving one of Flick’s midfielders.

Barcelona are now facing a nervous wait before their next game at Camp Nou on Thursday.

Gavi has suffered a knee injury and Barcelona are now waiting to discover the full extent of the problem.

The midfielder was forced off during the first half of Sunday’s 5-0 victory over Elche, with Flick confirming after the match that the issue was located in his knee.

The Barcelona boss offered a somewhat positive initial update, although further testing will be required.

“Yes, it’s in the knee. We have to wait. It’s a little better than he expected when he got injured. After the game was much better. We will make an MRI and see,” he told reporters.

Gavi’s injury will naturally cause concern given his previous struggles with knee problems, which have already disrupted important periods of his career.

Barcelona will now wait for the results of his MRI before knowing whether the latest setback is something serious or a problem that will allow him to return quickly.

The timing is particularly unfortunate with Flick’s side preparing for another La Liga fixture against Athletic Club at Camp Nou on Thursday evening.

For now, the focus will be on Gavi’s recovery and the results of the upcoming examinations, with Barcelona supporters hoping the midfielder has avoided another significant knee injury.
