Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong will miss the next La Liga encounter with Girona due to an adductor overload, and coach Hansi Flick does not want to risk his fitness ahead of the crucial Copa del Rey semifinal against Atlético Madrid on April 2.

With a busy schedule—only 64 hours between the Osasuna and Girona games—Flick is taking no chances with his players and not risking injuries. The Dutch midfielder’s slight problem has necessitated caution, and he will be ready for the cup game, reports Diario Sport.

Rotations were already being used by Flick, with Robert Lewandowski and Pau Cubarsí being omitted in the last match. Young Ferran Torres was impressive playing the false nine, with defenders Iñigo Martínez and Eric García likely to play more important roles against Girona.

In midfield, Dani Olmo’s absence has caused rotation, with Gavi or Fermín López replacing him. Raphinha could replace him on the right wing if Lamine Yamal is rested, with full-backs Jules Koundé and Alejandro Balde rotated for Héctor Fort or Gerard Martín.

Pablo Torre, who excelled in the latter part of the game against Osasuna, could also see action as Flick weighs competitiveness against depth in the team. With the next game against Atlético coming up, Barcelona’s success in rotations will determine their La Liga and Copa del Rey season.

Flick’s strategic approach aims to keep key players fresh while maintaining momentum—a delicate balance that will be tested against high-flying Girona.
