Barcelona’s squad rebuild continues to take shape under Hansi Flick, with the Catalan giants focused on securing the long-term futures of their key players.
Following strong recent performances in La Liga and the Champions League, the club’s leadership has turned its attention to contract renewals, a crucial part of maintaining stability amid financial restrictions.
The Blaugrana’s strategy involves rewarding consistency and leadership, especially among players who have become the face of the project.
Flick has been vocal about the importance of continuity in his midfield, and one player in particular has been central to that philosophy.
After months of speculation and behind-the-scenes discussions, Barcelona and Frenkie de Jong are reportedly on the verge of finalising a new contract.
The 28-year-old midfielder, who also serves as one of the club’s captains, is currently tied to Barcelona until the end of this season.
However, the club made extending his stay a top priority, ensuring one of their most influential figures remains part of the long-term vision.
According to multiple reliable sources, a verbal agreement has already been reached, with only a few minor details left before an official announcement is made.
The Dutch midfielder himself has now effectively confirmed the renewal while on international duty with the Netherlands.
When asked about the ongoing talks, Frenkie de Jong said (via Fabrizio Romano): “Exactly, as I always say, I’m basically going to renew my contract with Barcelona.”
Continuing, he added: “We are very close, and if there’s real news, you’ll hear about it, but I can’t say anything for now.”
When pressed further on whether he intends to stay at Barcelona long-term, De Jong replied: “I hope to stay at Barcelona for the rest of my career.
“This is the place I wanted to be as a child.
“Now we have a team with a great future, I want to win the big trophies here.”
As per reports, De Jong’s new deal will run until 2029, extending his stay by three more years.
The renewed contract will also include an adjusted salary to align with the club’s current wage structure, with the midfielder expected to earn around €12 million per year (gross).
De Jong’s resurgence under Flick has been one of Barcelona’s key success stories over the past year, with the Dutchman flourishing as the heartbeat of the team’s midfield.
His commitment signals not just loyalty, but belief in the club’s project, and the dream of restoring Barcelona to Europe’s elite.
