As Barcelona prepare to continue their push for silverware this season, there’s a growing sense of stability at the club following a series of key player renewals.

The Catalan giants, currently juggling domestic and European commitments, have prioritised securing their future by tying down the core of Xavi’s squad to long-term deals.

After the recent extensions of others, the focus has now turned to one of their most important midfielders, and fans have finally received the news they’ve been waiting for.

Frenkie de Jong’s future had been a subject of speculation for months, with reports suggesting that several Premier League clubs were closely monitoring his situation as his previous contract neared its end.

Yet behind the scenes, there was always confidence within Barcelona that the Dutchman would stay loyal to the club he’s repeatedly described as his dream destination.

That faith has been rewarded.

Earlier today, Barcelona officially announced that De Jong has signed a new long-term deal, extending his stay at the club until 2029, ending a long-standing saga once and for all.

His previous contract was due to expire next summer, which had sparked rumours that he could potentially leave as a free agent.

However, it has now been made clear that the midfielder never seriously considered leaving Camp Nou, with his commitment to the project remaining unwavering.

The new contract includes a significant update to his release clause, which has been raised from €400 million to an eye-watering €500 million, reflecting his immense value to the team and the club’s desire to fend off any external interest.

Speaking to the club’s media after signing his renewal, De Jong expressed his delight and long-term ambition in Catalonia.

“I signed for the club I dreamed of as a child and now I hope to be here for ten years and be able to win the Champions League and as many titles as possible.”

“I want to be here for many years and win many titles, right now I’m excited about the sports project with such good and so young players,” he added, when reminded that he was the club’s eighth highest placed foreigner in terms of minutes.

For Barcelona, De Jong’s decision to stay marks another victory in their mission to retain the core of a squad built for the future, one that still dreams of European glory.
