Barcelona have continued their contract renewal streak, with several first-team stars pledging their futures to the club as Hansi Flick looks to build a lasting project in Catalonia.
After sealing long-term extensions for others, the focus has now turned to cementing the futures of other key figures, and none are more integral than Frenkie de Jong.
The Dutch midfielder has been instrumental in stabilising the team’s performances this season, earning plaudits for his composure and consistency in midfield.
His influence has grown both on and off the pitch, particularly after being named one of the club’s captains under Flick.
Barcelona’s board are eager to tie down their core players ahead of what promises to be a competitive campaign in Europe and La Liga, and De Jong’s future was always viewed as a top priority.
The long-running contract saga now appears to be nearing its conclusion.
As confirmed by Frenkie de Jong, the 28-year-old is “very close” to signing a new contract with FC Barcelona, a deal that will keep him at the club until 2029.
Multiple reliable outlets have backed the news, and fresh reports indicate that the announcement is now officially scheduled.
According to ESPN, Barcelona will announce De Jong’s contract renewal next Wednesday, 15 October.
The midfielder is currently on international duty with the Netherlands, who face Malta in the World Cup qualifiers before taking on Finland on Sunday, 12 October.
Once he returns to Spain, De Jong will formally sign the new deal before the club release the announcement midweek.
The Dutch international’s current contract was due to expire at the end of this season, leading to months of speculation over his future.
But after changing agents, negotiations accelerated, and an agreement has now been reached.
Signed from Ajax in 2019 for €75 million, De Jong’s new contract includes a salary adjustment to align with the club’s current wage structure.
With De Jong’s future secured, Barcelona’s attention will now shift to extending defender Eric Garcia’s deal, as the Catalan giants continue to lock in their next generation of leaders.
