Barcelona have landed a major financial boost after a former defender joined West Ham United permanently, which is formally only a triggered transfer under the loan deal because West Ham managed to maintain its Premier League status.

According to Marca, the €8 million deal was made permanent four, after West Ham’s loan season, now allows Barcelona to pocket roughly €8 million because of a 20% sell-on clause from his previous transfer.

This financial boost comes at a particularly important time for Barcelona, who continue to struggle financially, and it provides a much-needed injection to use to improve its salary cap for the next season.

The player in question is Jean-Clair Todibo, a 25-year-old French center-back and player that West Ham acquired on loan from Nice in August 2024 with an obligatory purchase option of €40 million.

Todibo’s purchase option was activated when West Ham ensured its Premier League status.

The defender struggled with injuries and his adaptation to the Premier League, but he played 27 matches for West Ham, of which 21 were starts, and has since earned a four-year deal with the Hammers.

Barcelona signed the player from Toulouse in 2019 for €1 million.

In total, Barcelona has benefited around €17 million or other in various transfer profits from Todibo, and this also demonstrates that they included sell-on clauses with strategic thinking.

Even after just four first-team matches at Barcelona, Todibo’s potential was clear as day. After his move to Nice in 2021 for €8.5 million (with Barcelona retaining 20% of any future transfer), the club has finally benefited!

While the club technically does not own any economic rights to Todibo anymore, the €8 million profit is a reflection of the Cousins’ intelligent piece of transfer business.

With them heading in the same direction with players like Ez Abde and Oscar Mingueza, this provides a financial boost towards targeting players like Luis Diaz and strengthens their squad for next season, as well.
