Deco has broken down the factors that led Barcelona to ditch Marcus Rashford, shedding light on the strategic decision at Camp Nou.
Despite the 28-year-old forward delivering a stellar loan campaign in Catalonia—bagging 14 goals and 14 assists while helping the Blaugrana capture La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup—Barcelona ultimately opted against triggering their £26 million (€30m) permanent purchase clause.
Instead, the Catalan club made the surprise decision to allow the England international to return to Old Trafford while dropping £59 million (€70m) to acquire Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon.
Speaking in an interview with RAC1, Barcelona sporting director Deco broke his silence to clarify that the club’s decision came down to tactical compatibility and pressing intensity under manager Hansi Flick.
While Deco expressed immense gratitude for Marcus Rashford‘s productive contribution last term, he emphasized that Gordon’s work rate and physical profile better suited Flick’s tactical vision.
“We are extremely grateful to Rashford.
He contributed a lot last season, but our idea of play is much more linked to Anthony,” Deco stated, noting that the team needed a noticeable boost in energy whenever Raphinha was absent from the lineup.
Flick had made it clear to the sporting department that high-intensity pressing from the front line was a non-negotiable requirement for his transition-heavy blueprint.
While Marcus Rashford proved lethal in front of goal during his spell at Camp Nou, the coaching staff viewed the 25-year-old Gordon as a more relentless defensive engine.
Additionally, Gordon’s younger age profile aligns with Deco’s vision of building a long-term core capable of competing across Europe for years to come.
The decision appears to be paying immediate dividends for Barcelona on the pitch.
