Nico Williams looks set to stay put at Athletic Bilbao for the upcoming season, dealing a blow to Barcelona’s hopes of adding the winger to their squad this summer, per The Athletic – pending further confirmation.
In December of last year, Williams signed a new three-year deal with the Basque club, committing to stay with the team until 2027. His decision to extend his contract was driven by his desire to continue competing in European football with his childhood club, despite Barcelona’s interest.
Athletic Bilbao’s fifth-place finish in La Liga last season secured them a spot in the Europa League, with the added perk of hosting the 2024-25 final at their home ground, San Mames stadium.
While no official announcement has been made, both Barcelona and Athletic seem to be operating under the assumption that, barring any unforeseen developments, Williams will still be donning the Athletic Bilbao jersey when the summer transfer window comes to a close.
