Barcelona’s thrilling win against Atletico Madrid arranged a blockbuster Copa del Rey final against arch-rivals Real Madrid.
Aside from the glory of lifting the trophy, the Catalans can gain much financially from the competition.
As reported by Diario Sport, the financial reward for winning the Copa del Rey is quite substantial.
Although real finalized official figures for this campaign have yet to be unveiled, the victor will receive €1.2 million and the runner-up €1 million, as per reports.
Since all La Liga teams already won €660,000 by competing independently, Barcelona possibly stands to win a whopping €1.8 million if they defeat Madrid.
The tournament also distributes €33 million of TV money, 90% of which (€29.7 million) goes to professional clubs.
La Liga teams receive most (€26.73 million), and they divide it equally among the 20 teams – adding another €1.34 million to Barça’s coffers irrespective of the outcome.
Cash-strapped Barcelona would welcome these funds, but the value of history cannot be overstated.
Already the most successful team in the competition with 31 titles, they would like to add to their lackluster Copa final record against Madrid.
Although the estimated €3.14 million total earnings (TV share included) are welcome relief, defeating their arch-rivals to claim silverware.
The April 27th meeting is a high-pressure game – both financially for Barcelona’s coffers and their quest to reassert domestic supremacy after recent setbacks.
With economic pressures still being experienced, every euro is precious, but the opportunity to defeat Madrid in a cup final is the ultimate prize.
