To say Frenkie de Jong has been underwhelming since he joined Barcelona from Ajax all those years ago would be an understatement.
The Blaugrana thought they were signing one of the best midfielders in the world, however, in recent years he has become an outcast in the squad.
Under Hansi Flick, it seemed like it was going to be a similar story for the 27-year-old, playing minimal minutes and being offered to different clubs.
De Jong had also recently been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, where they were reportedly preparing a bid for the Dutch midfielder.
However, a new report by Sport, via Managing Barca, has claimed that Flick believes De Jong has enormous potential and that he can compete for a place in the starting lineup.
This seemingly comes after the Netherlands international had an impressive performance against Real Betis in the Copa Del Rey where he played the full 90 minutes.
It is still yet to be seen if De Jong can force himself into the midfield picture when it comes to the league of Champions League.
Also, if Barcelona do receive a big offer from Saudi, it feels like they would have to accept it due to the Dutch midfielder’s high wages and the fact his contract is set to end in 2026.
Time will only tell but Flick does seem very happy with the current squad and De Jong is part of the squad, for now anyway.
