Despite missing key defenders, FC Barcelona’s backline has performed admirably at the start of the 2024-25 season.
Coach Hansi Flick has had to make adjustments, as Ronald Araujo has been unavailable since Flick’s arrival, and Andreas Christensen was sidelined after the season opener against Valencia.
In response, Flick has turned to Inigo Martinez and Pau Cubarsi as his central defensive pairing, and both players have risen to the challenge.
Martinez has stepped up as a commanding presence and emerging leader within the team, while the 17-year-old Cubarsi has impressed with his tactical understanding and composure, defying his young age.
Their outstanding performances have solidified their roles at the heart of Barcelona’s defense, making it challenging for other squad members to claim a starting spot.
This situation, however, is a concern for 23-year-old Eric Garcia, who is seeking more consistent playing time. According to Fichajes, Garcia hopes for increased minutes, but with Barcelona open to his exit, they have set a price of €10 million for the Spaniard.
This has reportedly attracted interest from several European clubs, making a transfer a likely solution to his pursuit of continuity.
