Opportunities in Barcelona can be fleeting, and for some, they can be gone as quickly as they materialize.
One of the players this season, earlier in the season, saw his opportunity emerge, somewhat unexpectedly, when the first-choice goalkeeper had an injury, leaving him the chance to showcase himself briefly as the starting goalkeeper, the position he was looking for as a career turning point, and he did it professionally, and calmly.
But football moves fast, and the opportunity can vanish even quicker.
By mid-winter, due to a new signing, the hierarchy for the goalkeeping role changed again as the once-respected deputy now rested/gazed on the bench as another goalkeeper sat in front of him.
Regardless of his commitment and patience, it became easy to see that his future does not lie at the Camp Nou.
That player is Iñaki Peña. The 26-year-old academy graduate, who at one time appeared to be the long-term solution in goal, is leaving Barcelona this summer, despite having a contract until 2026, according to Diario Sport.
What makes this peculiar is that the club will not get a transfer fee for his departure.
Peña will likely just walk away free, as Barcelona is releasing him a year early in what seems like a mutual decision to do so.
Peña’s path was set to end once Wojciech Szczęsny arrived on loan in January.
Sure, Peña did fine while Marc-André ter Stegen was injured, but with Hansi Flick choosing Szczęsny as the backup and Ter Stegen returning as the number one, there was no place left for Peña to fit into the plans.
Barcelona probably had plans to get some value from selling him before ensuring that the limited reality necessitated a practical solution.
For Peña, it is a bittersweet conclusion to his Barcelona journey.
A product of La Masia, he waited years for his chance, only to see it vanish as quickly as it came.
Now, as he prepares to depart, his next challenge will be finding a club where he can finally establish himself as a true No. 1—something that, despite his talent, he was never truly allowed to become at Barcelona.
