When Marc-Andre ter Stegen ruptured his patellar tendon in September, Barcelona frantically tried to figure out a short-term solution to his long-term absence.
Even though Inaki Pena was at the club, Deco decided to go out and sign former Arsenal and Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny.
The veteran Polish goalkeeper had recently retired the summer prior but jumped at the chance to play for the Blaugrana.
Since joining the club, Szczęsny has now displaced Pena as Hansi Flick’s first-choice goalkeeper and it does not look like changing anytime soon.
Wojciech Szczęsny earns Barcelona contract extension
Due to becoming a key player under the German coach, Barcelona look set to extend the 34-year-olds stay at the Camp Nou,
Sport, via Managing Barca, have reported that Deco plans to extend Szczesny’s contract for another year, ensuring he serves as Ter Stegen’s backup upon the German’s return.
Szczesny brings a lot more than just a safe pair of hands to Barca, he has played many years at the top level and having a backup you can rely on is huge for any club challenging on all fronts.
Hopefully, the Polish shot-stopper can continue his great form and become an important member of the first team under Flick for many years.
